French Country Decor: Everything You Need to Know

french style house

Don't be afraid to fully embrace design choices that may seem a little extra, such as a velvet canopy above your bed or touches of wallpaper. You'll find second-hand scores from the flea market and modern furniture alike in French homes and also catch a glimpse into the owner's personality. Ahead, you'll find tips on making your home feel like a corner of Provence or Parisian pied-à-terre.

French Country Decor: Everything You Need to Know About This Rustic and Refined Style

You’ll often find heavier materials like brass or steel and elements like shiplap, reminiscent of barns, in this style of home. Country French style, on the other hand, uses this same baseline, but adds in daintier elements. “I think you could take a farmhouse room and throw in some French furniture and some antiques and then you would have French countryside,” Joyce says. French-style interiors are often highly distinctive and eclectic, featuring furniture and decor from a broad range of eras, design styles, and sources. To achieve this look, juxtapose flea market finds with contemporary pieces or European antiques with midcentury modern furnishings. Keep the look cohesive instead of chaotic by repeating a few key colors throughout the space to connect the assorted elements.

The formal dining area has French country chairs upholstered in linen, Parsons style end chairs, and a gorgeous rustic French chandelier. Brittany describes her style as French country and says she seeks to create interiors that are classic and timeless. If you’re looking to craft French country interiors in your home, consider the following French country decor ideas from Joyce and Verma.

Stunning French Farmhouse Kitchens

The main house, guest cottage, and garage are all clustered around a courtyard and garden. A tonnelle, or pergola, attached to the side of a stone facade provides the perfect venue for casual alfresco dining and relaxing protected from the sun. Made of black hammered iron and topped with a bamboo roof, this pergola exudes French country style thanks to its pairing with French doors framed by blue-gray shutters. Climbing vines trained onto arched iron support poles further soften the view.

Elaborate stonework, stucco siding, and intricately carved doors are standard for the two aesthetics. An ornate iron balcony draws extra attention to the front entrance of this French country home. When decorating their homes, the French do not limit themselves to only antique and traditional furniture.

A forecourt of large-pebble chert and a zigzag of stepping stones lead guests to the charming facade of this country French-style house. Lush vines climb up the stucco walls, and window boxes upstairs brim with geraniums and petunias. The red brick accents pleasantly contrast with the home's honey-drenched walls and mossy-colored shutters, imbuing the exterior with an old-world ambience.

At the same time, the gilded mirror, distressed urn and decorative ironwork bannister hearken back to an earlier time with a European feel that lends a sense of pedigree to the space. The little velvet ottoman adds just the right note of softness to the foyer with a whisper of color and warmth. Instead I thought it would be fun to compile an imaginary tour comprised of my favorite rooms that you would find in a typical house, to present what I view as the ideal French Country home. The selected spaces work perfectly together and could easily be part of one home, but alas they are not. Gold mirrors and rustic sconces contrast with white polished marble in the master bathroom. “I love the reclaimed wood ceiling, the brick pavers, and the intimate nature of the space.

The French countryside is, undoubtedly, the best place to see and get inspired by beautiful, French Provincial homes. Many of the original homes—dating back to the 1600 and 1700s—are still standing today. Adding to the home's simple beauty, many roofs were made from slate or copper. Some famous French provinces include Normandy, Brittany, and Provence, as a province usually designated a regional city and its surrounding lands.

French Mediterranean-Style Homes

Although built in the 21st century, this home looks as authentic as the 18th-century European manor house it was modeled after. Built in the courtyard vernacular, the home, like many others in the French countryside, contains a large square gravel forecourt. Its warm, honey-hued limestone ranges from white to caramel in color; a mixture of smooth and rough-cut pieces was used to create a traditional look.

While the term “provincial” may imply “unsophisticated,” these homes typically embody an understated, rustic feel. It’s said that the first French provincial homes were modeled after the Versaille Palace (although, of course, they’re much smaller and more less ornate). Also known as the Provencal Homes – the design inspiration is more inclined towards ornated and decorated Parisian homes. For more information about French style houses in Los Angeles, simply click on the individual properties below to view their full description.

Brilliantly combining rustic and refined, French country homes bring classic European architecture into the present day. They range from quaint farmhouses to impressive chateaus, but all exude a sense of history and charm. Get inspired by these French country houses to add a bit of this gorgeous style to your home. Aside the country furniture, it’s important to incorporate a mix of patterns through textiles. “Generally speaking, people are often afraid to use pattern, but that’s very French country,” Verma explains.

French country homes are technically a kind of farmhouse, so you'll usually find that they have great kitchens and layouts conducive to hosting. A French country house plan is one based on the style seen across the countryside of France. Unlike American farmhouse-style country homes, French country homes have a more rustic feel yet formal feel with stucco and/or brick siding and hipped rooflines. These designs range from quaint cottages to grand manors, yet all have a down-to-earth feel overall. If you're drawn to rustic farmhouse-style interior design rather than a modern, minimal feel, a French-style home could be an ideal backdrop for your aesthetic. Here's what you need to know about French-style homes, their history, and their main characteristics, according to an architect and interior designer.

I feel strongly that all our rooms should be used, so better to style these seating areas in a similar way, than to make one so formal that it’s a museum space that may as well be roped off. My selection for the kitchen in my imaginary ideal French Country home is in fact white, but it, too, makes use of natural wood tones to infuse the stark white with a degree of rusticity. Compiling an imaginary home that’s made up of your favorite rooms is a worthwhile exercise in self-exploration, as it yields some surprises.

The late-1800s bluestone door surround was treated with a slush-and-brush technique to mimic repaired stone. Round windows from a French chateau help instill the distinguished character of a century-old villa in the new home. The exterior of this French country home was fashioned from plaster mixed with pale sienna pigment, while the roof tiles were made by hand and shaped over the craftsman's thigh. They were left unglazed to allow moss to grow, another detail that adds to the overall pastoral look.

The interiors of French-style homes typically complement the exterior design, with distressed hardwood flooring, often laid out in a chevron pattern. Tall ceilings with dramatic wooden beams and skylights along with floor-to-ceiling windows drench the homes in natural light, while arched doorways open up to courtyard gardens. “French-style homes also typically have a formal dining room and living room, breakfast nook, and family room rather than one big great room,” says Spath.

My poor kids were scared and couldn’t see me on the flight and the crew wasn’t sensitive to the situation and what the airlines did to us. Very dissatisfied with United airlines. I think the seats on some of their planes are uncomfortable. You can be ok on a short flight of two hours but no more than that. The delays, and also the refreshments on the plane were not enough. The plane was old and you are required to connect your own device to their Wi-Fi rather than have entertainment options in the back of the seat in front of you.

I liked the piloting of the aircraft. Very disappointed about lack of electrical ports. There was enough time to hand out snacks to comfort + seats as was done for first class.

Today in History: Muddy Waters dies

Isaiah Muse was born in 1919; he would have turned 100 last month. He grew up in Boley, Okla., which was founded in 1903, and for a time the richest predominantly black town in the country, a model of ambition, business savvy and class mobility. Its decline — tied to the Great Depression and the bankruptcy of the Oklahoma-Arkansas railroad — began a decade later, and coincided with Muse reaching his teens. The Muse family owned a farm that harvested cotton and corn; they had nine boys and girls. Places to Grab the Best Waffles in Chicago

Our catering service offers the flexibility of buffet-style or individual portions to suit your needs. We provide pick-up and delivery options for your convenience. Looming before me is the 1902 Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a 284-foot neoclassical limestone pillar, flanked by statues and fountains.

Instead I grab a breaded pork tenderloin, an indigenous Indiana sandwich, from a Casey’s convenience store. From the yellow homogenized vegetable oil spread used instead of butter, to the half-centimeter-thick rubbery waffles, just about everything served is the cheapest, most heavily processed version available. The Cajun beans n rice with smothered gravy and onion on the chicken. At Chicago Waffles, we believe age should never stop you from enjoying delightful flavors. That’s why we offer a range of specially curated dishes for our beloved seniors. Nestled in the heart of the historically rich village of Oak Park, you’ll discover Chicago Waffles – a modern, vibrant cafe, setting the gold standard for an unparalleled breakfast & brunch experience.

If chicken isn’t your thing, you can get fried fish and waffles instead for an equally unique experience. In Chicago, not only can you get chicken and waffles in any part of the city, but you can get them from a wide array of restaurants that range from the Michelin-rated to hole-in-the-wall. You'll find yourself dining at a 1990s-themed diner or at an upscale River North restaurant —and everything in between — to explore what Chicago has to offer with chicken and waffles. Be sure to dive into the variety of flavors and share your favorites. This former industrial area has undergone a remarkable transformation, with historic warehouses now housing some of the city’s hottest restaurants. Our second to none breakfast and brunch menu captures the essence of this vibrant neighborhood.

The crowning touch is a 30-foot bronze female figure of Victory, holding a sword and a torch, with an eagle perched atop her head. The last 12 miles to downtown Indy on high-speed roads are nothing to write home about. But it’s transcendent when I roll up around midnight at Monument Circle, a block from my hotel. The next morning I’ll drop off my steed at the nearby Bicycle Garage shop for shipping and catch Greyhound home. Vaxxed, I belly up to the counter for my first sit-down dinner since COVID-19 hit Chicago. I order hash browns “all the way,” that is, with onions, American cheese, ham, tomatoes, jalapeños, mushrooms, chili, and sausage gravy; topped with fried eggs; plus a pecan waffle and coffee.

So why are there no Waffle Houses in the Chicago area? A spokesperson for the chain didn’t immediately respond, but I’ve got a couple theories. This sophisticated northern metropolis might not be an ideal market for the chain’s down-home cuisine, which includes southern accents like grits, sausage gravy, Texas toast, pecan waffles, and sweet tea. And maybe Chicago’s 24-hour dining niche was already filled by the many “Golden” coffee shops, including “Nugget,” “Apple,” and “Angel,” not to mention our many awesome late-night taquerias. Our catering menu has a range of options from our classic Chicago Waffles to custom creations designed to suit your unique preferences. A tower of sage-fried chicken on top of a tower of waffle wedges – all held together by a large knife.

Indiana is the less urban, more conservative mirror image of Illinois, and as I zigzag southeast on farm roads, the scenery soon resembles a typical Prairie State landscape. But Trump signs and “Don’t Tread on Me” banners are more prevalent, and in one careworn small town, a house on Main Street has a large Confederate flag in the window. Using the Northwest Indiana bike map, I navigate southeast on the Erie-Lackawanna Trail, and then east on the Oak Savannah, which is heavily wooded and dark. Nevertheless, on Friday, May 14, after work, I depart my home in Uptown for the 70-mile trek to the summer house in Beverly Shores. It’s going to be a late night, but about 80 percent of the route is on bike paths. And when a buddy invited me to his bachelor party this month at another friend’s summer house in the Indiana Dunes, roughly on the way, that sealed the deal.

Our best-seller list is updated monthly to ensure you’re always in for a delightful surprise, with our waffles consistently finding their way to the top. Visit us at one of our four locations and enjoy a remarkable experience of breakfast, brunch, or lunch in the Chicago Waffles style. A huge selection of cocktails go great with this variation of chicken and waffles. Nothing feels better than a restaurant that reminds you of home. Start your day with the steaming coffee and delicious waffles at Cozy Corner Restaurant and Pancake House on Milwaukee Ave, and say goodbye to Monday blues.

The buttermilk fried chicken is thick and crispy like it’s waffle counterpart, all dusted with powdered sugar – a great blend of sweet, buttery and savory flavors. As the name would suggest, this South Side gem located in the heart of Bronzeville is mostly dedicated to chicken and waffles. Their thin and crispy waffles provide balance with thick pieces of fried chicken.

Virtual Tour of the St George Utah Temple

st. george temple open house

President Jeffrey R. Holland, acting president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, rededicated the St. George Utah Temple on Dec. 10. Flooring in both the north addition and the historic structure is a mixture of new wood, carpet and tile. The new wood flooring is similar to the historic flooring used in some areas of the north addition. The baptistry has red metaquartzite flooring in the font, lobby and entry vestibule. This stone is quarried south of Las Vegas and supplied by Las Vegas Rock.

Some 250 trees have been added to the temple grounds, with previously existing planting and shrubbery either replaced or added to in enhancing the landscaping. The steel fencing has been painted a dark bronze to complement the temple’s exterior features. Where possible, historic wood doors were abated of their lead paint by a certified abatement company, Eagle Environmental Inc., then repainted and reinstalled in their original location. All the new doors are white painted wood to match the paneling and other details of the historic doors. The original hardware did not meet the current building code and was redesigned using historic hardware precedents. New cast bronze and porcelain hardware was manufactured by Rocky Mountain Hardware in Hailey, Idaho.

Learn More about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Similar to the Salt Lake Temple, the newly renovated St. George temple will reflect elements of the temple’s original historic design. Latter-day Saints built temples in Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois, only to abandon them after persecution forced them from their homes and, finally, to Utah. The church released multiple photos from inside the temple, including the celestial room and baptismal font. The fence surrounding the temple site was installed in the 1977 renovation. In the new renovation this steel fence has been sand-blasted and painted a dark bronze to match the new site elements. Much of the existing planting and shrubbery was replaced or added to make the grounds lusher and greener and provide better views and photo opportunities of the temple itself.

LED lighting and state-of-the-art high-efficiency systems throughout the temple, so it will operate in an efficient way for many years." When the temple was completed, Brigham Young was not completely satisfied with the tower and dome, stating that it looked too short and squatty. He suggested having it fixed, but the Saints were so excited to have the temple finished that Brigham Young did not push the suggestion.

Excavation around the temple's foundation will also be required to install new mechanical heating and cooling systems. The 257-foot high Los Angeles California Temple looms over famous Santa Monica Boulevard in Westwood. The spacious grounds are filled with a dazzling array of foliage including—to name a few—Canary Island Pine trees, several varieties of palm trees, Bird of Paradise trees, olive trees, and rare Chinese Ginkgo trees.

In November of that year, the St. George site was dedicated, with the cornerstone not laid until March 1873. Workers razed the west entrance to the temple that was added in the 1970s, exposing the old pioneer exterior. The same will be true inside, where floors altered in the 1970s are being redesigned to look more like the 1870s original. Modern workers covered support beams with steel, wrapped columns with fiberglass and drilled steel pipes called micropiles feet deep into the bedrock below the foundation.

“I anticipate that this temple will last for 50, 60, maybe even 75 years without a major renovation, if it’s maintained well,” he added. A few areas of the temple, such as the celestial and sealing rooms, have gold leaf accenting. In November 1928, fire broke out, destroying the St. George Utah Temple annex built in 1883. The Founding Fathers of the United States of America appeared twice to Wilford Woodruff in the St. George Utah Temple asking why their temple work had yet not been performed on their behalves. A striking painting depicting this singular event hung for decades in the temple lobby (That We May be Redeemed by Harold I. Hopkinson).

Additionally, some roads will be temporarily closed for utility construction. The Temple Visitors’ Center will remain open during construction, but there will be no access to the temple site during that time. And the annual Christmas light display will not take place during construction. Eric Jamison, project manager, said, "One of the aspects of this project is preserving the original building. The structure of the building is in fantastic condition given its age. Despite its age, the temple has endured very well." World War II delayed construction of the Los Angeles California Temple for many years.

A new quatrefoil-shaped fountain replaces its predecessor, with a second fountain added to the east plaza. No renovation for the state’s fourth pioneer-era temple, the Logan Utah Temple, have been announced. In January 1871, a temple for St. George was announced by Brigham Young, the Church’s first since the exodus from Nauvoo, Illinois, in the 1840s.

The open house and dedication come on the heels of similar events conducted for the recently renovated and rededicated St. George Utah Temple, the Church’s oldest house of the Lord still in operation. Utah is home to nearly 2.2 million Latter-day Saints, and the St. George Utah Temple is one of the Church’s 28 houses of the Lord in the state that are dedicated or under construction. The finished temple was dedicated on April 6, 1877, as the Church held its general conference that spring at the temple to coincide with the dedication. Windows have been replaced, matching the historical profiles and details but upgraded to insulated triple panes.

The green color represents the rice fields and the farming community in the area. The carpet carving design incorporates the almond flower to coordinate with the art glass. The rug designs are reminiscent of an open field of local wildflowers and the California poppy, the state flower.

The moldings in the historic temple and the north addition are wood or glass-fiber-reinforced gypsum. Due to the large amount of ground water on the site, the historic building (1877) required special effort to ensure a proper foundation. After packing the site with lava rock using a cannon as a pile driver, the first layer of foundation stones was laid using large blocks of locally quarried basalt. The exterior walls were built from another local stone, red sandstone, stacked and grouted together. The upper portion of the existing annex will also be demolished and replaced with a design that will complement the historic structure. Additionally, limited seismic upgrades will be made by adding steel to the temple’s original wood trusses.
